SimfoNiMo

Last Friday I got to see the SimfoNiMo concert in Riga. Behing SimfoNiMo is the nu-jazz project NiMo – local turntablist DJ Monsta and jazz saxaphonist Nic Gotham. In this gig they played with the Latvian National Symphonic Orchestra (LNSO).
The main part of the concert was classical music with a touch of NiMo where the orchestra was dominating leaving little room for scratching and improvisation. But the best part was NiMo palying their own tracks with the orchestra just adding to the music. The track “Dream” was just fantastic – slowish beats, groovy saxaphone with more groovy orchestral layers and a poem by latvian poet Aleksandrs Čaks.
Next time I would like to see even more original music by NiMo with more and louder beats. At some points of the concert the orchestra ate up the beats of DJ Monsta and didn’t let them go.
Chack out NiMo on MySpace. Feel the NiMo!
